ABSTRACT
Two important competencies that support each other in solving mathematical problems with higher-order thinking (HOTS) are mathematical connections and critical thinking. This study aims to reveal in depth the students' ability to solve HOTS-based problems on the material of arithmetic sequences and series, reviewed through the stages of mathematical connections and critical thinking processes in students with high cognitive abilities (SAL). The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive approach. Data collection techniques included observation, provision of non-routine HOTS-based problems, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used in this study were data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study show that SAL can fulfill several indicators of mathematical connections and critical thinking, as shown in questions at levels C4 and C6. However, in solving questions at level C5, SAL is not optimal in solving HOTS mathematical problems, as indicated by obstacles in building complete conceptual relationships and providing appropriate solutions.
